Cathy Johnston: Why I Give with Adirondack Foundation

Cathy Johnston and her husband, Wayne, know that a healthy balance of nonprofit organizations and businesses is critical to the Adirondack region’s long-term viability. As owner of Ruthie’s Run, a specialty retailer of sportswear in Lake Placid, she understands the  day-to-day challenges of running a business in a seasonal economy. As a member of Adirondack Foundation’s Board of Trustees, she knows the broader region’s needs and the organizations that address them.

“The Adirondacks are a special place, with abundant natural resources and not as many human ones,” Cathy says. “Capitalizing on our human resources is important to keep our communities strong.  Developing leadership and strategic-thinking skills in people who live here, as Adirondack Foundation does, will help keep all our nonprofit organizations strong.”

“We believe in philanthropy and want to continue to support charities throughout our lives,” she adds. “We are building a fund at Adirondack Foundation during our earning years that will allow us to continue to fund charities regardless of our income after we retire. Additionally, when we are no longer around, it will continue to support good works.”
