Leveraging matching funds in Malone
In the last 10 years, the Malone Community Fund has awarded $25,000 in grants to organizations in and around Malone. This year, the fund awarded $500 in seed funding for a $2,100 campaign for milfoil reduction efforts by the Horseshoe Pond/Deer River Flow Association. The group hired divers from the Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College to target milfoil that was blocking boating and fishing paths.
“We believe we can control the problem in our community within the limits of our local resources,” says Carole Miller, association president. “Our lakes are a priceless and fragile natural resource, providing habitat for wildlife and fisheries, and a place for pleasure, activity, and recreation.”
