Local kids in 4th through 8th grades have something new and fun to do at Oak Mountain Ski Center in Speculator.  Friends of Oak Mountain (FOOM), a committed group of volunteers, won a $5,000 matching challenge grant from a fund at ACT to boost fundraising for a winter program that will get kids outside, promote physical activity on weekends, strengthen community pride and maybe even boost patronage of the ski center.  The program will augment the limited athletic choices available at the small public school.

FOOM got started in 2010 to help keep Oak Mountain operating, and the list of volunteers grew by leaps and bounds.  The ski center has operated since 1946 and is now under new, private ownership.  Matt and Laura O’Brien, the owners, are working hard to make the ski center a viable business, but they need help.  FOOM volunteers believe in their hometown ski hill and want to make sure it stays open and lively.

FOOM will continue to work to raise funds for youth recreational programming with a long term hope of establishing a competitive ski team.
