Watertown Grad Spends Her Junior Year of College in London

Chelsea Taddonio, three-time winner of the Decker Scholarship, is thrilled to be able to study abroad.

Traveling has been important to me ever since I can remember.  It is part of the reason I decided to study journalism in college, and why I decided to study abroad for a semester.  Traveling can be very expensive.  Luckily, I have received the Charles B. Decker Memorial Scholarship for each of my three years of college.  I am a junior at SUNY Fredonia.

This scholarship is awarded to students planning to or studying journalism in college who need of financial assistance.  It is dedicated to Charles B. Decker, a passionate journalist with a strong commitment to newspaper journalism, who died unexpectedly at age 34. I appreciate this support extremely. I work up to two jobs every summer and on college breaks to pay for school.

Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to save enough money to study in London for a semester. I am able to study abroad with the CAPA program through SUNY Oswego.  My semester abroad has been amazing!  I am taking three classes as well as being an intern with GRN Live. I commute to school and work just like a local student or freelance journalist would!

The London Olympics are right around the corner, and I was assigned by my boss at GRN to make a video of the Olympic sites.  It is now on the GRN YouTube channel!  This is a perfect mix of work and pleasure, and taking full advantage of my time in London.

London is a one-of-a-kind city with so much history and diversity.  I've flown with Peter Pan and explored an Italian fountain garden in Kensington Gardens.  I've seen the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, Portobello market, many museums, a football match, the Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar square, and much more. There is a lot I still have to do, like horseback riding in Hyde Park.

London phone boothTraveling to the amazing places near London is a must.  So far, I have been to see Stonehenge, the city of Bath, and Paris.  I went to Paris for three days.  I got to see Notre Dame Cathedral, drink champagne at the top of the Eiffel Tower, ride a bike through the streets of Paris at night, east lots of cheese, and look deep into the eyes of the Mona Lisa.  I felt like I was in a movie for a weekend.

Next on the list is Dublin…

I have been exposed to a different culture while still learning skills I'll need for the future.  If it weren't for this scholarship, I would have missed out on all of this.  I cannot thank the Decker family enough!
